How can i make a room quieter?

Q. My infant daughter's room faces a large common yard in my townhouse complex and it has 2 windows. It's so loud out there, dogs, kids playing, lawnmowers etc. It always sounds like a monster truck rally in there. I already have blinds and curtains up in the room but for some reason that room lets in more of the noise than the room below it which actually has more windows and an exterior door. What can I doo to make it quieter up there?

A. You could buy some sound absorbing fabric that's found in recording studios and such.

where can i get Living room theme in chocolate, mocha, cream, colours?
Q. Hi i want to decorate my living room. i have a black leather sofa and pine flooring. i love the chocolate/mocho,cream look, but i havent been able to find any room examples on the net of some design inspiration. I also love dulux new range of rich neutrals (cocoa blush, velvet truffle and maraschino) so if you can find any of these similar colours used, or u have used them in your living room, let me know!!!

A. I used a palette of all brown tones in my living and dining rooms and we really love it. its a very warm and earthy feel. cozy and calming. We have dark hardwwod floors. The walls are painted a soft light brown (not beige). The trim is painted a very dark chocolate color ("traditional" by Ralph Lauren). the trim includes window and door frames, baseboards, picture rail in the dining room, beams in the ceiling, and the framing on the accent wall which is made of leather panels. The stucco fireplace is painted a burnt orange/red which really highlights the copper ceiling. The hearth is made of terra cotta ceramic tile. Window treatments are wooden shutters with dark bamboo insets. Our sofa is light tan with bold deep red cushions. And we have a leather wing chair and ottoman by the fireplace. In the dining room we have a large dark walnut pub table and pub stools upholstered in a tan and red stripe. At first we thought the color scheme might be too monochromatic but as the rooms are small, it really helps give the appearance of unity and space to the area. Plus we incorporated a lot of texture into the rooms: leather, bamboo, ceramic tile, copper, stucco. we used red as the only color in an otherwise all brown room as it ties together all the elements nicely--the leather furniture and panelling, the copper ceiling tiles, the dark walnut of furniture and floors, the terra cotta tiles, and all the various tones of brown in the paint and upholstery. We have a couple of contrasting accents in the room: a bronze aztec mask hand painted with turquoise and silver details and a beautiful Navajo carpet that our friends brought back from Santa Fe, which we use as a throw on the sofa. we also have a couple of mexican pots with aloe and yucca in them, and a bronze lamp with amber glass shade. We have kept the accents down to a minimum of color contrasts. Some people have commented that they find the rooms too dark, but we love the cozy and warm/earthy neutral feel that the space creates. Its a great color choice and we feel we will be able to live with it a lot longer than most of the bright trendy colors that seem to change from year to year. browns are classic and timeless.

Painters - How much do you charge for a room?
Q. I'm a student painter, and sometimes we have trouble estimating the right price.

How much do you guys charge for a average medium-sized room? Lets assume that this room is big enough to use up 80%-100% of a gallon. This includes 2 coats on walls, one coat on baseboard, and no ceilings.

A. 350 is a fair price if they buy the paint.

How am I supposed to get through being agoraphobic at 16 without messing up my life?
Q. Yes. I am 16 years old and I think I am becoming agoraphobic. I'm so completely terrified of leaving my room, let alone the house. I start having mental breakdowns when I leave my home. I don't know how to get through this without failing out of school, or messing up my future. I've been skipping school because of my fear and I know that's bad. I'm scared to talk to my parents about it too.

A. AGORAPHOBIA often occurs as a result of having had a panic attack in a public place, and not wanting to repeat that experience outside of a place where someone feels safe, which is usually at home, in a place where they feel exposed, and unable to get help quickly. Recommended reading: The Agoraphobia Workbook: A Comprehensive Program to End Your Fear of Symptom Attacks by Dr. Elke Zuercher-White and Dr. C. Advice from a clinical psychologist is to breathe in to the count of 3: (one thousand one; one thousand two; one thousand three) each takes around a second to say to yourself, in your mind, and out to the count of 3. Keep repeating this until the panic subsides, which will deal with the hyperventilation aspect. Others use Passionflower, Lavender tea, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, but use no milk or cream with herbal teas, or Valerian (caution: use it for 3 weeks at most!). Know how these affect you before driving, or doing anything dangerous, and it is far better to use the treatments, rather than relying on herbal remedies, except short term. How do i fix this bright yellow living room?

Q. Hi, I painted my living room with what i thought would be a light yellow satin paint. It is very very yellow and bright. Too much for any room, let alone a living room. Nope didn't test first on anything. Just kept thinking if its too light it will look like a cream and i want yellow. Wow, i got it! Anyway, i want to tone it down. I have textured plaster walls and thought maybe a cream or light brown would work if i just used a rag, sponge or flat roller, or something to put over top of the yellow. Would love to bring out the texture and let some yellow show through. Any suggestions? Thanks so much

A. I do not suggest trying to lighten the color by doing any faux finishes, it will not work. It will either not change much or may just look smoggy. The best thing that might work is by going over it with different types of color that will go good with the yellow, using ragging or sponging, removing techniques, etc. But again similiar colors trying to make it lighter will not work especially on yellow because it is too bright. I have done like a taupe ,coffee tone on top of it before and it worked good.

How can I convince my mom to let my bunny stay in my room?
Q. So, I'm almost positive I'm getting a bunny. But there' s only one problem, my mom won't let him stay in my room let alone inside. We have lots of predators here like raccoons, wolves, coyotes, neighborhood dogs and cats, maybe even bears. He wouldn't live very long outside and It would be such a drag to go play with him everyday, and that's why I want him in my room! So I can play with him all the time! Any Ideas on how too convince her? Thanks for answering.

A. If I was you I would ask for a trail period. She most likely is worried about the smell and the dirty cage. If you ,make a list of the days you will clean the cage and keep your room neat she might let you give it a try. We have had bunnies and they can smell pretty bad if you don't keep them clean.

Any tips for introducing cats to each other?

Q. I'm about to bring my cat (a little over a year old, female) into a home that already had a cat (a couple months younger, male). Both are fixed. I know the basics of keeping my cat in a closed room, letting the other cat have the reign of his territory while they get to know each other through the door, but does anyone have any good tips?

A. When we bought our new kitten we were worried about this too. You are doing the right thing by having them in seperate rooms. One thing you can do is crack the door a little bit, and put something both the cats like on each side for them (Like a dish of tuna) Make sure they have seperate plates. This will make their encounter with eachother pleasurable and they will remember that feeling. Even if they hiss, it's okay, it's normal behavior. Also, take something with the opposite cats smell, and put it where the other cat will be near it. This will make it easy for them to get some information on the other cat, without being face to face with them. I hope this will be helpful. Our cats are best friends now, so hopefully it will work for you too.

Is a Boxer really a good dog for a 9 year old girl?
Q. We are considering a Boxer now, and I've done tons of research on them. I hear they are excellent with both kids and other animals. Is that true? I am looking for some personal experiences here. I have a 2 year old and 8 year old daughter. My daughter wants to begin 4H- we have a medium sized yard so I think that there will be plenty of room let him or her romp around, run, and play.

A. Hi,I agree with what the other person said about the dog gets stressed, but that goes for any breed !
A boxer is a nice choice of breed, they are very good dogs.
ANY dog can either be a good or bad dog it really just depends on the owner if you respect him and treat him right you wil have a nice pet !
You seem like you done your research well and also are prepared for backyard, etc.
It's not gonna be good enough to just put him out in the yard though you have to walk him too, I'm sure you know that already, lol
But what I'm trying to tell is that somebody ones said to me that you should get the size of dog you will be able to handle.
I understand that the dog is going to be a familly dog but mostly for your daughter.
You can train the dog well at obiedience classes like in Petco or petsmart for example, but he is still an animal and if your daughter goes out to walk him... (Boxers are strong and large dogs) and he pulls your daughter might not have a chance to hold him.(sees a cat, etc.)
That's what I meant with "GET THE SIZE DOG YOU CAN HANDLE"
But if you'll be around I'm sure he will be fine.

They might have a few Boxers at your local shelter you can adopt wich is nice, cause there are to many dogs out there looking for a good home !!!!!
But since your one daughter is still very young you might wanna go with a puppy from a good breeder, not a store cause most dogs there come from puppy mills and nobody should in my opinuim support that !
Many dogs in Shelters are older and that means they've got history you wont know about !
But just try it out, before you adopt him you can go to the shelter and take him out to play with him a few times.
The advantage of that is that they might be trained already and housebroken where compare to a puppy you will need to do all that.
Dogs do take a lot of your time, but in the end its all worth it :)
I hope this helped and have fun with your new familly member.
Ps make sure you have all the supplies you'll need before he or she arrives !

Why do dorm rooms look so big in commercials?
Q. Are there any colleges that the rooms are actually that big? Other then a sorority or fraternity room? I have seen a couple dorms and 2 of them looked like it was lucky that 2 beds could fit in the room let alone the things they show in the commercials for the dorm room.

A. it is a set at a production studio shot with wide lens cameras...to get you to move in the dorms and to make your parents think it is safe and comfy

How to get a hold of movie posters?
Q. Hi.

I see how many people are able to get genuine movie posters that look like they were hung up as advertisements previously. My question is how I can get a hold of movie posters that I could get for free, and hand them up in my room lets say, or my den, etc.

This is all with no printing, purchasing on my part, just getting them for free.

Anyone?

A. I live in N.C.
our local Ingles store in town usually has there old movie posters in a basket by the rental stand and they give them away for free may be you could check your Ingles

Credit Card for holding hotel room question?
Q. When you use a credit card to hold a hotel room (lets say its for $100 dollars) and if its far in advance like a few months, is that amount blocked on your credit card that far at advance or just until you check in? Im planning a few nascar trips and going to be reserving over 10 hotel rooms and was just wondering..

A. Credit card blocking occurs when a merchant contacts your credit card company with an estimate of what your total bill will be and "blocks" that amount even though he isn't charging your card for the total amount at that time and might not ever charge your card for that amount.

An example of a situation where credit card blocking occurs is when you use a credit card to register with a hotel or car rental service. They call in an estimate of what your total bill might be to your credit card issuer and have that amount set aside or blocked for possible future use. This way you can't stiff them on the final bill later on.

While an amount has been blocked it cannot be used to make other purchases. So, if you leave your hotel room to go shopping, you might find your credit card declined on the basis that you have reached your credit limit.

Some credit card companies will let you go over your limit and then access an "over the limit" fee on your next statement. These fees are heavy and you want to avoid them if at all possible.

For the above reason, it is not a good idea to use a credit card that you have nearly maxed out when you travel.

Hope this answers your question.
