How to remove scratches and marks from old enamel sink?

Q. The kitchen sink in our rented house is old and the enamel coating is thin. We've tried bleach to clean it -- but it's discolored and has marks. Are there any proprietary cleaners that are good or does anyone have tips that will make it respectable? Thanks.

A. Get the lanlord to buy a new sink

How to cover black and maroon painted walls?
Q. I'm living in a rented house, and the chick I rented from said it's OK to paint the walls... they were an awful sage-colored gloss, and I painted them to a maroon (3 walls) and black (1 wall) with semi-gloss paint. It's worth noting that I had some problems getting paint to "stick" over the gloss, in case that will affect later paint jobs.

Now she springs on me that I MUST have the room back to white before I leave... any tips on covering these colors? It's a small room and I will really only have a day or two to do the paint job, so I hope to find something that can cover in only a couple coats. Is there some sort of primer that can achieve this? What about this "Kilz" paint I hear about?

A. Use Kilz or Zinsser primer. Then the finish color. I know Walmart sells Kilz Original for $12 a gallon.

How to take a broken key out of a window lock?
Q. I am currently in a rented house and in the spare bedroom a key is broken off in the window lock. It is obviously the wrong key as the window does not open but we cannot get the broken half out. The landlord is very unhelpful (as usual) but we really need to open it tonight as we have a guest staying and it is very hot in there! Any suggestions? We have tried tweezers but they are too big and nothing else seems to be able to get either side of it! Any useful tips would be great.

A. If your window lock is installed superficially, then try if you can locate the screws, these are usually concealed and may have special security screw heads too, but can still can be removed with hopefully no damage to the window or lock.

Now, if the window lock is recessed into the window frame, then you may have utility cam type lock or perhaps a mortise lock cylinder. For cam type locks, usually about 3/4" diameter, call a reputable locksmith!

For mortise lock cylinders, usually about 1" diameter, you may try using a vise grip plyer by getting a firm-locked grip around the cylinder and try unscrewing it counter clock wise, these cylinders measure from 1" to 2" long. Once removed you have access to the window latch mechanism, just trip its pivoting joint with a flat tip screw driver and your done.

You can later buy lock replacements at http://www.peerlessdoorlocks.com , good luck!

What is the best way to clean the glass in the shower?
Q. This shower has three sides of glass to it and man, you can hardly see through them (this shower isn't in my house but in a rented house that my cousin just moved into). She has a really bad chest infection at the moment and doesn't really want to use anything too harsh with chemicals as it'll make her cough, so is there anything that she can use in order to remove all of the milky white residue which I assume is limescale build up? And perhaps something that wont have her in there scrubbing too long?

Any tips are much appreciated :)

A. I would recommend Windex with Vinegar because vinegar is a disinfectant like bleach, but not such a strong smell. I would ask that you open a window to help keep the air circulating while you are cleaning. Also, see about using a small hand held squeegee to help wipe down the glass from top to bottom, like washing windows.
Hope this helps. Take care.
