Is a Rent to Own property a good option?

Q. My husband and I are looking to buy a home. During our searches, many rent to own properties come up. And a lot of them have great low monthly payments and usually not more than $100k is owed due to its foreclosure. This sounds like a great option, but are there any concerns we should have going this route? Any tips are appreciated...thanks!

A. If you and your hubby qualify for a home loan now, you would do well to avoid any rent to own properties. Those are for people who have less than stellar credit or little to no down payment saved. The rental or lease option period gives them a chance to fix those things so they can qualify for a loan. If that doesn't describe you, it wouldn't be to your advantage to bother with one of these properties.
